Counseling and Guidance
Purpose and Nature
The field of counseling and guidance is a branch of the social sciences, particularly psychology, with a practical focus. Its courses primarily address human development, various aspects of personality, and the prevention of problems and disorders, especially those affecting students and adolescents.
Today, humanity faces numerous challenges that can disrupt normal life. It is essential to overcome these issues. However, sometimes individuals cannot address certain problems on their own and need assistance from others, which is where the necessity for a counselor arises. A counselor is someone who has acquired the skills and expertise to guide others.
Counseling essentially means prevention, which involves teaching individuals how to avoid mental crises and navigate their paths to growth and development more easily and quickly. Another aspect of counseling involves helping those who are currently in crisis and unsure how to cope with or overcome their challenges. In such cases, the counselor assists the individual in recognizing their needs, goals, and the path to achieving those goals, enabling them to overcome their existing crises.
Counselors typically help individuals resolve their issues by empowering them. In other words, they assist clients in changing their thoughts, feelings, ideas, or decision-making processes to ultimately alter their relationships with the world around them. For example, they may help solve clients' family, economic, or workplace problems by collaborating with families, workplaces, or various institutions.
Required Skills and Recommendations for Aspiring Students
Students in this field need to develop competencies in educational psychology and be aware of economic, political, social, and religious issues to effectively guide clients from various backgrounds facing diverse problems.
Good listening and speaking skills are essential traits for counseling students. A counselor must create a supportive environment that allows clients to express their concerns and feelings while providing clear and articulate guidance.
Furthermore, counseling students should possess a balanced personality to positively influence and correctly guide others. They should also be research-oriented to investigate the causes of existing problems and crises in society.
Continuing Education
Currently, opportunities for further education in this field are limited to the Bachelor’s level in the country. However, students can pursue higher degrees such as Master’s and Doctorate abroad through personal investment or scholarships.
