Job Description: Engineer, Backup & Storage

Job Summary

The Engineer, Backup & Storage plays a critical role in ensuring the reliability, availability, and performance of enterprise backup and storage systems. This position focuses on the management, troubleshooting, and optimization of storage infrastructure and backup solutions to meet business continuity and data protection requirements. The role involves working with SAN switches, zoning, tape libraries, and troubleshooting storage-related issues, contributing to seamless operations and data security within the organization.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Backup & Storage Management

• Administer and maintain enterprise backup and storage environments, including SAN, NAS, and local storage solutions.

2. Troubleshooting

• Diagnose and resolve technical issues related to backup and storage hardware, SAN switches, tape libraries, and performance bottlenecks.

3. Storage Solutions Configuration

• Configure and manage storage solutions such as Dell EMC (SC9000, Unity, PowerStore), HPE, Datacore, and IBM storage systems.

4. Backup Management

• Implement and manage backup systems using tools like EMC Data Domain, EMC Networker, and Veeam to ensure reliable data protection and recovery processes.

5. SAN and Zoning

• Administer and configure SAN environments, including fabric management and zoning, to ensure optimized connectivity and storage performance.

6. Backup System Enhancements

• Evaluate backup performance, identify improvements, and implement initiatives to optimize backup success rates and efficiency.

7. Disaster Recovery

• Contribute to disaster recovery planning, implementing and testing recovery processes to ensure business continuity.

8. Migrations

• Plan and execute migrations from legacy backup systems to modern platforms, ensuring minimal downtime and data integrity.

9. Documentation & Reporting

• Maintain accurate documentation for storage and backup infrastructure, including configurations, procedures, and change logs.

10. 24/7 Support

• Provide on-call support for backup and storage systems, addressing escalated technical issues and minimizing downtime.

11. Mentoring

• Assist junior team members, provide training, and collaborate with internal and external teams to resolve technical issues.

12. Client and Team Coordination

• Collaborate with internal teams and clients to ensure seamless integration and support for storage and backup systems.

Job Requirements

Academic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, with a focus on technical problem-solving and IT infrastructure management.

Experience & Minimum Requirements

• 2–3 years of experience in IT services, systems management, and specifically backup and storage administration within large enterprise or data center environments.

Skills

• Experience in SAN management, including Fabric Manager and SAN switches.
• Strong knowledge of backup solutions such as EMC Networker, Veeam, and other enterprise backup and recovery tools.
• Experience with tape libraries, zoning, and troubleshooting storage issues in complex environments.
• Ability to analyze and resolve storage-related technical challenges across hardware and software platforms.
• Familiarity with disaster recovery planning and backup system migrations.
• Proficient in creating and maintaining detailed documentation for backup and storage environments.
