Afghan Family Guidance Association (AFGA) is an Afghan non-governmental, not-for-profit and non-political organization established in 1968. Alongside the Ministry of Public Health, AFGA has been working in the field of Reproductive Health since its inception. AFGA is a fully accredited member of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) and an important partner of UNFPA.

A committed team of more than 600 experts are working in 11 provinces of Afghanistan to achieve AFGA goals and objectives. AFGA provides health services to the most vulnerable and hard to reach communities through over 140 service delivery points.  

About Hospital:

AFGA is in the process of establishment of a 20-bed hospital in Kabul, aimed at providing quality Reproductive Health services to mothers and newborns. The hospital will be fully equipped with modern medical equipment, facilities and staffed by experts.

As part of a long-term development plan, hospital services will continuously expand, serving as the central hub for AFGA outreach and small Service Delivery Points (SDPs) to refer patients needing advanced care. The hospital will adhere to national and international standards for patient safety and quality service, ensuring it meets the needs of target communities.


Job Description: Gynecology/Obstetric Specialist


Job Summary

AFGA is seeking an expert Gynecology/Obstetric Specialist for its Midwifery Help Line consultant position. Supported by UNFPA Afghanistan, the Midwifery Help Line provides advisory services to RMNCAH service providers across the country through a free short code available 24/7. The consultant will deliver remote advisory services to health service providers according to service delivery SOPs.


Responsibilities

  • Counseling Services: Deliver quality Sexual and Reproductive Health services, including family planning, HIV/AIDS, STI, post-abortion counseling, and cervical and breast cancer counseling.
  • Midwife Support: Provide supervision and advanced care to women during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period, supporting midwives in conducting home-based deliveries and referring complications to health facilities.
  • Emergency Care Management: Manage complications in pregnancy and childbirth following the principles of basic emergency obstetric care, ensuring infection prevention measures during deliveries and organizing standard ANC/PNC activities in targeted areas.
  • Community Education: Consult and educate women, families, and communities on health topics related to mother and newborn health.
  • Postpartum Counseling: Offer postpartum family planning counseling services and consultation for complicated cases.
  • Family Planning: Deliver comprehensive counseling on all family planning methods and support midwives in administering PPH (Postpartum Hemorrhage) management.
  • Referral System Development: Develop an effective referral system for long-term family planning methods and support midwives in conducting PNC visits within 48 hours after delivery.
  • Self-Care Education: Provide information and education on self-care and raise awareness among women during visits and social assemblies to increase demand for services.
  • Newborn Care: Support midwives in providing instant newborn care focusing on airway management, warmth, and breastfeeding, as well as daily newborn care, including physical examinations and immunizations.
  • Data Management: Ensure proper data recording and reporting systems are in place, preparing and submitting monthly reports to the coordinator.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Graduated from a recognized medical university.
  • Completed specialization in Gynecology and Obstetrics.
  • 3-5 years of proven clinical experience as a specialist in Gynecology and Obstetrics at secondary or tertiary health service levels.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Fluency in Dari and Pashto is required; knowledge of English is desirable.
  • Proficiency in using computer office applications is a plus.
  • Previous experience in a similar role is advantageous.
