Job Description: Shariah Board Member


Job Summary

The Bank’s Shariah Board is the highest authority in making the final decision on matters related to Shariah in the Bank’s course of business operation. The Shariah Board is responsible for the views, decisions, and advice provided to the Bank and is expected to deliberate extensively on every arising issue before arriving at any decision. The Board has the right to call upon any relevant party in the Bank or convene meetings with identified parties to facilitate decision-making. The Shariah Board has an advisory role only.


Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Perform an oversight role on Shariah matters related to the Bank’s Islamic operations and activities by identifying possible Shariah issues and proposing necessary corrective measures.
  2. Assist Management in overseeing the enforcement and implementation of the Shariah Board resolutions, disclosing sufficient information on the Bank’s state of compliance in its annual financial report as per applicable laws.
  3. Provide clarifications and opinions, and issue resolutions on matters pertaining to both generic and specific issues associated with Shariah principles.
  4. Approve all products, manuals, policies, and procedures submitted by the Shariah Department.
  5. Ensure that all Shariah requirements outlined in guidelines and resolutions are followed by related departments post-approval.
  6. Act as the sole point of reference and highest authority in all Shariah matters relating to banking and finance.
  7. Advise on other functions prescribed by DAB related to Shariah matters.
  8. Issue opinions on addressing and rectifying any Shariah non-compliant practices.
  9. Observe other relevant provisions as contained herein.
  10. Other duties and accountabilities as outlined in the terms of reference (TOR) of the Shariah Board and the Bank.

Job Requirements

Education:

  • Master’s degree in one of the following fields:
    • Islamic Banking & Economics
    • Usul-ul-Fiqh (Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence)
    • Shariah & Law
    • Fiqh-ul-Muamalat (Islamic Commercial Law)

Experience:

  • At least three years of experience in Islamic banking operations or five years of teaching experience in Usul-ul-Fiqh or Fiqh-ul-Muamalat.

Certifications:

  • Prepared to obtain Certified Shariah Expert (CSE) or CSA from AAOIFI.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Knowledge of the Islamic banking industry.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in local languages, Arabic and English.
  • Knowledge of investments and Islamic financing.
  • Understanding of AAOIFI’s standards.
  • Decision-making skills related to Shariah matters.
  • Computer knowledge.
