Job Description: Nutrition and Child Development Educator
Job Purpose
To promote optimal Maternal Infant and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN) practices and provide practical support for mothers in understanding and addressing common issues related to MIYCN; advise mothers on Early Childhood Development (ECD).
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Growth Monitoring:
- Undertake growth monitoring and promotion (GMP) for all children under two years.
- IYCF Assessment:
- Conduct Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) assessments for all caregivers with children below 2 years.
- Nutritional Counseling:
- Provide nutritional counseling to pregnant and lactating women and mothers/caregivers of children under two years, addressing breastfeeding and complementary feeding difficulties.
- Support for Breastfeeding:
- Address common difficulties among lactating women and suggest culturally appropriate solutions to promote adequate breastfeeding.
- Educational Sessions:
- Conduct education sessions within the facility for all caregivers on optimal MIYCN practices.
- Anthropometric Measurements:
- Support the OPD Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) nurse in conducting anthropometric measurements (weight, height, MUAC, and edema) for all children aged 6-59 months.
- Classification of Nutritional Status:
- Classify all children under five into categories of Normal, Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM), and Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM).
- Service Referral:
- Refer children to appropriate services based on their nutritional classification.
- Community Engagement:
- Identify pregnant and lactating women, form Mother-to-Mother Support Groups (MTMSGs), and conduct monthly meetings to educate them on optimal feeding practices.
- Training Lead Mothers:
- Train and supervise lead mothers to facilitate sessions within MTMSGs.
- Food Demonstration Sessions:
- Plan and supervise food demonstration sessions within MTMSGs to improve optimal complementary feeding practices.
- Community Screening:
- Participate in mass MUAC screening at the community level on a quarterly basis.
- Data Recording:
- Ensure recording of relevant MIYCN data and submit monthly reports to the head of the health facility or nutrition officer.
- Travel Requirements:
- Be prepared to travel to other parts of the country as required.
Organizational Responsibilities
Policy Adherence:
- Adhere to the Code of Conduct, maintain humanitarian principles, and respect international humanitarian law.
Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA):
- Actively promote PSEA standards within International Medical Corps and among beneficiaries.
Compliance & Ethics:
- Promote a culture of compliance and ethics, maintaining a clear understanding of IMC and donor compliance standards.
Safeguarding:
- Safeguard and protect vulnerable populations and children from exploitation, abuse, and trafficking.
Job Requirements
Qualifications:
- High school graduation.
- Training in nutrition counseling, MIYCN, and IMAM.
Knowledge:
- Understanding of community nutrition programming.
- Knowledge of nutrition, health, and child development.
Skills:
- Strong communication skills.
Experience:
- At least 1 year as a Health Educator; experience in nutrition, IYCF, and ECD programming.
Competency:
- Fluency in the local language; proficiency in English is desirable.
